driving while on the phone

today i learned a very valuable lesson while driving. i was on my way to work, and was calling a very long number on the phone (international call via calling card). luckily, the entire number sequence was stored in my phone, so i could just wait for my phone to beep in the appropriate numbers. anyway, while i was dialing, i was happily cruising along in the middle lane, minding my own business. a couple hundred feet ahead of me on the right, i saw a station wagon about to make a right turn onto the street i was on. being a careful driver, i slowed down a bit to confirm that the station wagon was turning into the rightmost lane. this would allow me to continue on in the middle lane. much to my chagrin, the station wagon chose to turn into the middle lane--the very space i was occupying. i slammed on the brakes and wanted to honk at the stupidity of the other driver. unfortunately, my phone was still in my hand, so my other hand had to make a choice of honking at stupid driver, or swerving to avoid stupid driver. as much as i wanted to honk, i ended up swerving into the leftmost lane. so let this be a lesson to all of you: don't use your cellphone while driving, lest you be unable to honk at stupid drivers. and if you've driven in arizona before, you'll know how painful it is to not be able to honk at stupid drivers.

also, my international phone call didn't go through. bummer.

blind date

when i walked into my house, my roommate said, "i'm having a girl over. she should be here any minute now. i hope she's good looking." i nodded or gave some sort of response, wondering why he was telling me this blind date of his. about an hour later, he came into my room and said "i'm starving and i can't wait any longer. i'm going out to grab something to eat. call me if the girl comes." and so he left.

of course, a few minutes after he left, i heard the doorbell ring. i invited the girl in and quickly called my friend. the phone conversation went something like this:

me: "hey, the girl is here"

roommate: "oh okay. so what do you think of her?"

me: "huh? what do you mean? did you get your food yet?"

roommate: "i'm in line to get food right now. so do you think the girl is good looking? or just okay? or what?"

now at this point, i'm feeling a bit awkward because the girl is standing right in front of me so i respond: "um... i'll let you decided."

roommate: "just tell me. if she's good looking, i'll pick her something up to eat."

me: "whatever... bye."

after being queried by my roommate, i was faced with the task of entertaining the girl. so after some small talk she asked me, "so what do you think of [your roommate]? is he a good guy? trustworthy? nice?" i'm not sure what sort of response she expected from a guy's roommate... so i said what any other person in my position would have and said "sure". she told me how she was nervous since she had never met my roommate before and i could only think that she was a far braver soul than me.

after a few more minutes of mindless chatter, my roommate arrived. with food. for two people.

at the very least, judging from the sounds emanating from my roommate's room later that night, they were reasonably satisfied with each other.
