what exactly is "play"?

so at 2am one evening, i was online when i received a buddy request. being the friendly guy i am, i accepted. here is our chat transcript (name censored to protect the [not so] innocent):

cr*****: hey
me: hi
cr*****: wassup ?
me: not much
who are you?
cr*****: we must have chat your screen name is on my buddy list. Are you looking to play
me: huh?
how did you get on my buddy list?
cr*****: you must have email me from Craigslist
me: i don't know...

after a while, i realized that the person's user name was the same as the email address for my apartment's property manager. the thing is, i have never used this account to email him, so i still have no idea how he obtained my user name... scary...
