weird.

i left my house today in an attempt to catch a glimpse of kerry eating at a delicatessen nearby. however, as i stepped out the door, a guy across the street caught my eye. i wasn't sure who it was, but our eyes met, and there was mutual recognition. the eye contact turned into hand waving and he proceeded to trot across the street to talk to me. however, when he made it across, it became obvious that i had no idea who this guy was. our conversation went kinda like this:

enter yao and random guy from across the street
random guy
oh, i don't know you.
yao
yea, i don't know you either.
random guy
but i feel like i know you from somewhere...
yao
hum... yea, i have the same feeling.
random guy
.....
yao
.....
random guy
well, it was nice meeting you.
yao
yes.
exeunt

if only i could meet girls like that...

curses!

about 9 months ago, i was contemplating which online service i should use for a blogg. basically, i was faced with the choice of blogspot and livejournal. blogspot had recently been acquired by google. and as any l337 h4X0r knows, google == good, even if they steal your soul. however, livejournal's sexy comment system and the grim realization that i am quite simply too lazy to make a comment system decided it for me. and because i have no blogspot, i have no gmail. sorta like this guy who made his blogspot thing a little too late.

incidentally, it's snowing during finals week! which begs the question: does god read livejournal? perhaps things are about to take a turn for the better.

last day of classes

today was the last day ever of classes for me. my entire five year stint here at the university is finally coming to a close. so goodbye, difficult to get into chairs of classroom 1680. no more dancing and hopping to get into my seat anymore. goodbye to bad cigarette-breath man and mr nose picker. i shan't be exposed to your offensive bodily habits any longer. and last, but definitely not least, goodbye hot focus girl... i will never understand why you were always so eager to catch my attention and talk to me in class, yet for some reason, outside of class you always seemed to avoid me like the plague. well, cest la vie.

after this one project, which is due tomorrow, i'll be on cruise control... a state of mind i was hoping to achieve about a month and a half ago. full on too much pizza and 3 hours of sleep. i'm not sure i'll miss the student life.

initiation

initiation for tau beta pi was today. the food was better than i thought it would be. and we had a string quartet play for us. all things considered, i think it was worth 81 dollars. i like food. and volunteering is fun. so i guess i'm officially a nerd now, and soon i'll even have my own official bent to prove it. even one of the violinists from the quartet made fun of me. well, such is the life of an enginerd.

the real man

today was the big day. yes, it was tax day, but more importantly, it was the day mcdonald's was selling twenty chicken mcnuggets for three dollars. this, of course, meant that mr. fu and i had to buy twenty each and have a race to see who could eat them fastest. whoever finished first would have claim to being the manliest man around. keuynish expressed an interest in joining, but for some reason, she didn't show up for the event. anyway, we had agreed on meeting at mcdonald's for the event and that the victor would be declared the real man. unfortunately for us, mcdonald's was closed due to some water pipe breaking, so we didn't get to show everyone our manliness. however, there were some free bagels in the coffee shop next door, so i settled for three or four of those, leaving our manliness to be tested some other day.

classroom sleeping

i was in my linear programming class today (what? taking LP your final semester? yes, i'm a bad planner) and i was just thinking that the class was starting to get interesting. anyway, two students in the back row happened to have fallen asleep. unfortunately for them, the classroom is really small, and the back row is the third row. and by "fallen asleep" i mean all-out, head resting on the table, and out like a light. the professor noticed this and decided to start asking the two sleeping students questions like "are you tired?" and "do you find these problems boring?" at that point, the students woke up. unfortunately, they were unaware that they had been addressed by the professor and executed the "i'll just stare at the white board and my notes so it looks like i was paying attention" strategy. now generally, this strategy works. unless of course, the professor asked you a question and the entire class is staring at the sleep creases on your face.

i of course, laughed at them. as long as it doesn't happen to you, it's funny. right?

hashish and singing

today the diag was filled with people smoking pot. no, this isn't a common occurrence here in ann arbor. today was a day for celebrating marijuana in ann arbor's annual hash bash. we had the usual hippie drummers, hacky sack players, and frisbee throwers, however this year there were people advocating the medical use of marijuana and others screaming that bush and cheney need to get out of office. but if you're thinking of coming to ann arbor next year for hash bash, be sure not to light up until you are off of university property. the fines are a lot lower and there are less officers looking for people smoking up.

tonight was also my first ever a cappella concert. i had always thought that only losers who were attracted to young boys liked a cappella. but after the friars concert tonight, i've turned into an a cappella guy myself. combine great singing, even better lyrics, and crazy on-stage antics, and you've got the friars, the university of michigan's oldest a cappella group. you can find a sample of a billy joel song they redid here.
