i must speak!
as a michigan man, i closely follow the sport of college football. it is a sport rife with controversy and heated debates. a lot of this has to do with the method by which the national champion is selected. the current process is basically a one game playoff, where the two participating colleges are selected by a very obfuscated process consisting of an combination of two different vote driven polls and an amalgamation of a handful of computer algorithms which also rank teams.
this season, there happens to be one clear #1 and two teams who have a legitimate claim to the #2 spot. personally, i think there is a clear #2 team as well, but i say two teams have a claim to the #2 spot because while michigan is the clear #2 team in the nation, it currently does not occupy the #2 spot in the polls/rankings.
but why would people think michigan is #2 if they did not vote thusly?
the reason is simple: people do not want to see a rematch in the BCS championship. you might think that being the huge michigan football fan that i am, i would be incensed that the voters had thusly excluded michigan from the title shot it rightfully deserves (as dictated by the BCS). on the contrary, i am somewhat relieved. while i am angry that michigan isn't #2 in the polls as it rightly deserves, i'm glad we are avoiding a rematch.
michigan playing tOSU again would be bad for michigan. first of all, if michigan wins undecisively, who really wins the NC? both teams are undefeated save for once loss to each other. and if michigan loses... we only serve to further cement ourselves as "not the best team in the nation". the non-rematch approach also gives tOSU a chance to get urban meyer to shut the hell up.
i just want people to recognize michigan as the #2 team it is.
that said, i am excited to be going to the rose bowl this year. anyone care to join?
